Advanced Production Techniques - Mix Project.

Sorry for being pretty quiet lately, been busy with work, Beijing Bandits and university, but deadlines are coming up and hopefully I’ll have a bit more spare time. Anyway…

I made a 20 minute mix for my Advanced Production Techniques module at University, and if you wanna listen to it, you can find it here. The tracks used are:

  • Get a Move On – Mr. Scruff
  • Bad Boy Good Dance – Tape Five
  • Living Beat – Mop Mop
  • Clash (Original Mix) – Caravan Palace
  • We Can Dance – Caravan Palace
  • Stash – LoudMimeDave
  • Ego – LoudMimeDave
  • Champion Sound (Alternative Mix) – Crystal Fighters
  • Pearl’s Dream – Bat For Lashes
  • Baptism – Crystal Castles

I’d really appreciate it if you had a spare 20 minutes to give it a listen and tell me what you think, constructive criticism is massively appreciated or you could just tell me it’s awesome/fucking shit/whatever you think. Cheers tumblr! :)

Dirty Ape - Beijing Bandits

I’ve recently joined a band called the Beijing Bandits, who are a gypsy folk rock band based in Newport. You can check out the Soundcloud or like us on Facebook. We’re playing a gig on the 9th December at Le Pub, Newport and another gig on the 15th December at Meze Lounge, Newport.

Recently, I’ve started listening to a lot more experimental electronic music. After producing my entry for The Science Museum’s remix contest, I had another shot at producing my own experimental electronic piece. Seeing as I’m still getting to grips with Ableton Live 8, I had a go at mixing while recording, mainly altering the cutoff, attack and resonance.

 – Rolex Knockoff
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Rolex Knockoff” was my first attempt at producing a Moombahton piece. Set as (almost) a challenge, by my friend Caramelou, I sampled “Wearing My Rolex” by Wiley, slowing the BPM and adding percussive instruments.

 – OraMIX: Satellite Song
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Written as a response to The Science Museum’s OraMIX competition, “OraMIX: Satellite Song” uses audio stems of Daphne Oram’s recordings in order to create a new “song”, through remixing the available audio.

 – Sunshyne
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Sunshyne” was the product of being asked to edit Dario G’s “Sunchyme“, in order to use the final piece as backing music to a live fashion gallery exhibition. The brief was to only use the section with tribal-like vocals and to repeat till the piece ended.

 – Stash
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Stash” was my first shot at actual electronic music production. I wanted to make a dark sounding dubstep song, using only the samples available in Ableton Live 8. This is the product of my first shot with proper music sequencing software and, although I know it’s not great by any means, I’m quite proud of it.
